A Complete “Titanic: Adventure Out of Time” Part Eleven   Leave a comment

Carlson heads into the B Deck cabin areas to meet with Mr. Conkling and Georgia. Since Carlson has not yet met with Miss Hacker, Conkling brushes him off. Before he heads out the door, Carlson pokes around the room, picking up details not featured in the identical cabins of the Burns’s or the Lambeths. Carlson goes to Gerogia room, where she substantiates his concerns that Sasha is involved in some sort of Serbian group. Georgia informs him that they are “looking for guns, for bombs!” Georgia’s husband interrupts, kicking Carlson from the room. Carlson returns to the Purser’s Office, in hopes of picking up keys for the car, to enter the Cargo Hold with. Instead, he is sent on a mission to find a cuff-link for Mr. Strauss. Remember when Max told us he was in the Reception Room? While there, Zietel offers some ominous warning about Germany knowing British and American plans to stop Germany’s advances in the coming years. Carlson returns the cuff-link, snatches the keys, and heads to the Cargo Hold. There, he finds a blue 1912 Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville, and a crate labelled “Lamke and Buechnor,” but no painting. The seaman offers a hint: “A young German gentleman, he came here not long before you did…Wanted to get a painting. Got it too, carted it off somewhere.”

“Historical Note: The 1912 Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville on the Titanic was actually red (as seen in James Cameron’s film) and *may* have been crated. Also, the layout of the cargo area is very incorrect. I would guess this is done to simplify things, but incorrect nonetheless.

Carlson returns to his cabin to decode the telegram he has picked up. Before doing that, he takes the time to read the report Penny mentioned to him earlier in the evening. He decodes the message, revealing that Zeitel has a contingency plan despite the Rubaiyat’s disappearance. He returns to the Purser’s Office to tell the Purser that the telegram from Mr. Thayer has been sent. While the Purser is out, Carlson sneaks a peak at the cargo manifest, noting an entry for a painting from Lemke & Buechner Shipping for one painting, signed Sasha Barbicon. One of the photos Carlson developed had Sasha holding a case with that label on it. Carlson leaves the Purser’s Office. Not sure how to proceed without the Purser, he wanders to the C Deck cabin where he meets Daisy again. Going aft, he knocks on the Burns’ door, where Eric Burns shows him a photo of Lord Lambeth and Andrew Conkling together. This reminds Carlson of his other obligations, and he is off to visit the B Deck cabins.

A Complete “Titanic: Adventure Out of Time” Part Nine   Leave a comment

Part Nine starts with Carlson making his way to the Cargo Hold in search of a painting. Cue one of the best and creepiest songs in the game. He can’t go into the Cargo Hold, but the seaman drops the hint that the Carters’ have a car aboard that they are allowed to go into the Cargo Hold…provided they show prove of ownership by presenting the automobile’s keys. Being unable to find it, he returns to his previous mission, sending Mr. Thayer’s telegram. Carlson talks his way past [fictional] Third Officer Morrow with an interesting conversation which suggests a parallel between Morrow’s experience during the Boer War and this night, April 14, 1912. The connection? No moon. and gains access to the Wireless Room. He send the telegram and picks up one of Zeitel’s coded messages, which he pockets. While walking aft along the Boat Deck, Penny stops him and tells him to attempt to listen in on a private conversation between Zeitel and Sasha. While attempting to do so, Carlson discovers a pair of binoculars on the aft-most deck-house, no doubt, they belong to Officer Morrow. While he realizes he cannot listen in on their conversation while he is visible to them, Carlson descends to the A Deck Promenade. There, he hears their conversation.

*Historical Note: Titanic’s Third Officer was, in fact, Herbert John Pitman. For more info, visit http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/herbert-john-pitman.html

Hot on the trail of Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, Carlson bolts for Boiler Room Three to give Vlad his package from the Serbian Sasha. Vlad almost asks for help to find another object which it seems he cannot find, but opts not to ask. Carlson heads down the ladder from the catwalk and snatches the Rubaiyat from a coal hatch. Now that he has the book safely in his possession, he pages through the book. Cyberflix took the effort to actually reproduce the passages for the game. Then Carlson takes a moment to talk to a rather snooty stoker. Here, the new Titanic novice can learn a few facts about the Titanic’s construction. The stoker talks about visiting a passenger on F Deck, a Miss Shailagh Hacker, reminding Carlson he still needs to meet with her on the Poop Deck for Conkling. Carlson returns to F-54 to talk to Penny. They make an important connection between Sasha and Zeitel by using one of the photos Carlson developed. Zeitel intended to exchange the Rubaiyat for a painting which Sasha was to provide. Carlson heads to the Purser’s Office to drop off the Rubaiyat. The Purser is more preoccupied with a telegram to be sent for real Titanic passenger, Mr. John Thayer. Carlson volunteers to send the message and finds his way to the Cargo Hold to search for this painting.

*Historical Note: The Purser’s Office was in fact a place where passengers could leave telegrams to be sent. However, the Purser would not have relied on others (especially other passengers) to get them to the Marconi Office. The Purser’s Office was equipped with a pneumatic tube which the Purser could send the telegram in (see the deleted scene “Wireless Room/The Californian” from James Cameron’s film “Titanic” for an example of what they would have looked like). For sake of the game, we will assume the tubes malfunctioned and the Purser was very desperate to get the telegram out.

Part Four starts Carlson out heading for his cabin to ask Smethells how to find a particular passenger’s cabin. He directs Carlson to the Purser’s Office then informs that Lady Georgia is waiting on the A Deck Promenade. We go meet the Purser. Whether he is anything like Mr. McElroy is anyone’s guess. After fetching the cabin number for Daisy, we take the lifts to A Deck, meet the outgoing Gorse-Joneses from Haltwhistle. To learn about the real life connection between the Titanic and Haltwhistle, read here http://titanicadventureoutoftime.wordpress.com/2011/02/13/in-focus-the-haltwhistle-connection/. They suggest Carlson visit a photographer on C Deck, but Carlson moves on forward of the First Class Grand Staircase where he runs into Layland Sachem Trask. Trask points out that he is a medium and a skeptical Carlson hands him the pipe Zeitel left behind in the Cafe. Trask suggests heading to the Turkish Baths and Carlson heads out to the Promenade. A flustered Georgia hands Carlson her diamond necklace and asks to meet in her cabin. Carlson, now with about four or five tasks to complete, heads back into the ship.
